I do apologize for the lack of blog posts these last couple of months! Moving cross-country is exhausting! I highly recommend NOT moving with 2 cats in the back seat of your car… for that is a unique experience in and of itself! 🙂 More posts to come shortly!

I absolutely love this quote by Nietzsche. I’m sure many a person would use this quote as proof to their spouse or significant other that video games are necessary in life. Albeit true… I feel a deeper meaning exists.
This is paraphrased from the work of Joseph Campbell as I never read anyone who described this better:
Nietzsche says there are three stages to the spirit.
First is that of the camel: The camel gets down on his knees and says, “Put a load on me”. This is the condition of youth and learning. When the camel is well loaded, he gets to his feet and runs out into the desert. This is the place where he’s going to be alone to find himself and he’s transformed into a lion.
The Lion: The function and deed of the lion is to kill a dragon, and that dragon’s name is ‘Thou shalt’. On every scale of the dragon, a law is written, some dating from 2000 B.C., others from yesterday’s paper. When the dragon is killed, the lion is transformed into a child. In Nietzsche’s words, “a wheel rolling out of its own center”.
The Child: The child can emerge when the camel is well loaded, the lion is potent and the dragon is killed. What the child represents in this mystical language is the human being who has recovered that spontaneity, innocence and thoughtlessness of rules, which is so marvelous in childhood. The little one who comes up and says absolutely embarrassing things to the stranger who’s visiting your house – the child who has the courage to live its impulses.
We all have this potentiality inside of us. This is where Nietzsche says: “In every real man, a child is hidden that wants to play.” He’s referring to this potential for us to go into the desert and transform ourselves and kill the dragon named: Thou shalt! Overcome the barriers imposed upon us, find our true selves, and embrace the childlike wonder inside of us. It’s a great way to truly live. A great perspective for appreciating the wonders and magic of the world.

Happy New Year’s Day!
New Year’s has to be one of my favorite holidays. I say this not because of the recent New Year’s Eve movie (which was GREAT, thanks for asking), but because any holiday which invokes the spirit of fireworks is always on my top ten list.
Fireworks amaze me! Not just for the sheer pleasure one gets from blowing something up, but for the symbolism behind it all. This sort of annihilation and destruction of one aspect to result in rebirth and the beauty of sparkles. It’s just magical!
New Year’s provides the opportunity for change, and no growth is had without change. This reminds me of the Nietzsche quote “the snake that cannot shed its skin must perish”. Life is full of death and rebirth cycles. Death to an old form that has played itself out… one we no longer have use for. There’s a circular movement, and through each incarnation of death and rebirth, we evolve.
No death, no life
No death, no transformation
New Year’s seems to be the apropos time for us to shed our skin and emerge with our new self, our tweaked spirit which is more in line with our true self. We emerge in the form of our true gods and goddesses, filled with power and readiness to take on the world.
May the feeling felt this New Year’s stay with you throughout the year! Live 2012 to the fullest! Kill it!
Carpe Diem
During this festive winter solstice, I’m very thankful for all of the troops coming home from Iraq. I can only imagine what a wonderful present this must be for all of the military families. May we continue to stand up and put action to our voices to keep the government from starting any future wars unconstitutionally. In Martin Luther King’s words:
“A true revolution of values will lay hand on the world order and say of war, “This way of settling differences is not just.” This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation’s homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into the veins of peoples normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice, and love. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”
May we pray/meditate/send positive thoughts for peace, love, and wisdom this holiday season and always.
